Abstract

This presentation argues for the possibility of social hope based on Thomas Aquinas’ doctrine of hope as set out in the Summa Theologica, which transcends both individualistic and collectivist interpretations of this virtue. The foundation of this hope lies in charity, through which it becomes possible to hope for eternal beatitude for oneself and for others. This charity is the core of social hope in particular and of the Social Doctrine of the Church in general.
