Abstract

The emergence of the mendicant orders in the thirteenth century generated a series of controversies about the lifestyle of its members. One was the issue of voluntary poverty. Numerous criticisms arose from various sectors to consider this option as something inappropriate. Thomas Aquinas answered argued for their meaning and relevance. The task of the Dominican master is an example of dialogue in the field of debate and discussion. On the other hand, his reflections on voluntary poverty and the right use of material goods are useful to talk about the consumption in contemporary societies.
