Abstract

The author aims to highlight the similarities and differences between Nietzsche and Gadamer concerning the relationship between language and thought. Both philosophers agree in recognizing language, in both its semantic and structural aspects, is a condition for thought. But there is an important difference in the way they conceive such condition. For Nietzsche, “we stop thinking if we do not want to do it under linguistic coercion.” Gadamer, however, perceives language as a “condition of possibility” of both thought and personal and intercultural understanding.
