The philosophical and theological debate about the problem of eternity or creation of the world that took place in the Middle Ages is exceptional without a
doubt. As it is known, while the biblical account teaches the creation of the world in time by God, from the eleventh century began to spread in Europe the works of Aristotle, the eminent Greek thinker of pagan origin who professes that the world has always existed. The challenge of coherence and clarity that means Aristotelian philosophy for intellectuals who profess a religious creed is then unavoidable. In this paper we analyze the resolution given by Maimonides to this problem and the reception of it done by Thomas, who openly acknowledged having used the idea of the Jewish thinker according to which there is no proof for any of the two theses, but only probable or sophistical reasons for both.
