Abstract

Th e Catholic Church went through a series of institutional changes between the coup d’état of 1955 and 1976. Changes that appeared since the 1950s were reoriented by the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Th is process, under a climate of increasing violence and political instability, had confl icting moments. It is the intention of this article to approach the process from a diocesan perspective, observing the diff erent ecclesiastical agendas and relationships, institutional changes and interactions between bishop, priests and laity in a diocese that sought to implement the Council’s reforms and in which there was no confl ict between hierarchy and clergy.
